During critical maintenance work on penstocks at a sewage treatment facility in Leicester, a major task prevailed: ensuring the uninterrupted flow of discharge while key infrastructure was offline. Luckily, Sykes Pumps was able to assist with an overpumping solution!

A key challenge was creating a set up that would be able to handle a wide range of flow rates, ranging from 100-300 litres per second, all while the main infrastructure was temporarily offline. Our solution? An overpumping framework that was built around high-performance submersible technology. To meet the demands of this large-scale operation we deployed a XFP301M Electric Submersible Wastewater Pump as the main pump, with another inline as a duty back up. All flow was routed on a 300mm pipework to accommodate the high volumes of flow, safely and efficiently.

In addition to the submersible pump units, we also installed an 8-inch super silenced diesel pump, which acted as high-level backup, providing an added layer of security.

The entire setup was controlled using variable speed drive panels and managed by ultrasonic float controls, to ensure precise and responsive operation. To monitor system performance, we integrated full telemetry support for those on site. Digital flow meters were also installed to accurately log and manage discharge volumes.

Throughout the entire process the Sykes Pumps team provided valuable support, ensuring all systems were set up, configured and tested before deployment. Our close collaboration with those on site, ensured the process was conducted quickly and without any operational delays.

Once installed, the system performed exactly to spec and continues to operate reliably. The client now has a high-capacity, fully monitored overpumping solution that is expected to remain on long-term hire throughout the duration of the penstock work. With digital monitoring and robust fail-safes in place, there is full confidence in the system’s performance. Another successful job from Sykes Pumps!
